MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS: HOW TO COPE-IN VARIOUS SITUATIONSC-AT SCHOOL:

TROUBLESOME MISERIES-FORGETFULNESS AND FATIGUE

You may find that the miseries affect your memory. This wouldn’t matter too much if it were not that so much teaching still requires you to learn by ‘committing to memory’. One of the difficulties is that many teachers still persist in setting homework that has to be completed that same night. This means that you can’t plan your life and memorize facts when it’s easiest for you to do so. Once again, your ally might be able to help. Teachers who set homework like this aren’t being unkind (or at least, most of them aren’t). They are just doing what’s always been done, without thinking about it. If somebody sensible could suggest a different method, they might well agree. But I’ll tell you how to pursue that at the end of this section.

Fatigue-Many girls feel very, very tired in the days before their periods and this makes life difficult, particularly at very demanding times like the run-up to exams or the end of term. Although it might prove difficult to alter the way your homework is being set, your social life is largely your own affair, and most of you should be able to reorganize that without too much difficulty. Discos, strenuous sports and late-night parties are fun, but hardly sensible if you need the next morning to lie in and recover. It’s much better to indulge yourself in the weeks after your period and be a bit of a stay-at-home in the days before, so that you rest when you need to. And don’t forget meals when you’re tired. After a period you can exist all day on a grapefruit and a cup of coffee, though it’s inadvisable even then, but you’re asking for trouble if you try it during the run-up to a period. You’ll be exhausted and clumsy, and probably very irritable too.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS THAT CAN HELP TO TREAT SCIATICA: NATUROPATHY

Posted by admin

Also known as ‘naturopathic medicine’, naturopathy is an extremely broadly-based system of medicine that combines a wide variety of natural therapeutic and healing techniques under one umbrella, and it can perhaps be best described as a mixture of traditional folk wisdom and modern medicine. The main underlying principle of this alternative therapy is that the root-cause of all disease is the accumulation of waste products and toxins within the human body, this usually being the result of a lifestyle that is ‘deficient’.

Like homoeopaths, naturopaths believe that the human body has the innate wisdom and power to heal itself, providing we enhance rather than interfere with this power. As far as actual treatments are concerned, naturopathy relies heavily on herbal preparations and diet management techniques, but depending upon his training, a naturopath may offer any – or even all – of the following therapies: physiotherapy, this based on water, ultrasound, heat or cold; yoga or other breathing exercises; biofeedback techniques; corrective nutrition; as well as many others.

Naturopaths rely heavily upon the practitioner and the patient discussing and agreeing upon what therapies should be used. There is also much emphasis upon the promotion of psychological health and the benefits of stress reduction. Generally, this is an alternative therapy that has a good track record in helping people with chronic ailments of all kinds, especially when the symptoms arise from or are made worse by tension, anxiety or stress.

MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS: HOW TO COPE-IN VARIOUS SITUATIONSC-AT WORK

Posted by admin

Menstrual problems at different stages in a woman’s life have to be coped with in very different surroundings. You may be at your office desk, standing at the sink at home, or working for an exam in the classroom when you develop a blinding headache or one of the other wretched symptoms we have been considering. Although some of the problems are obviously peculiar to the particular setting, the methods of dealing with them often apply to those that arise elsewhere. You may find some helpful advice even in the sections geared to stages and circumstances quite different from yours — some of the ways of coping with depression, work whether you’re fourteen years old or forty.

At work-When I started to think about this subject, I hardly knew where to begin, for nowadays over half the women in this country are out at work. The jobs they do are so varied and need so many different skills that if I were to deal with all the difficulties that can be caused by painful periods at work, I’d need to write a book and not a chapter. Nevertheless there are some general guidelines. Perhaps the most important of all are to do with safety.

Many women work in factories and workshops handling machinery which is hazardous at the best of times. If, on top of that, your period makes you clumsy and off-balance, you’re in very real danger of having an accident. Dr Dalton’s survey of four London hospitals showed that half the women admitted as emergencies were suffering from periods at the time they were admitted. And in the United States, the Center for Safety Education has discovered that most accidents to women occur in the forty-eight hours before their periods begin. Women are at risk at this time and so are the people they work with.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE-CREATURE COMFORTS: IN BED

Posted by admin

At night, something as simple as an extra protective layer of bedding may help to make us feel more at ease. We differ from one another in our attitudes to all sorts of things and one of the most influential as far as period pain is concerned is our attitude to the blood we lose. Some, particularly women who were born in the West Indies, see the flow of blood as a sign of health, a mark that their bodies are functioning properly. Others accept it as a natural flow, but see blood as dirty, something that stains sheets and clothing, and must be cleaned away as soon as possible. Others consider that menstrual blood is not only dirty, but morally ‘unclean’, something that they should be ashamed of. What we feel about our own blood is a result of what the women we know and love have felt and probably still feel. Some of us change our minds and our attitudes because we come into contact with other people with different ideas. But whatever they are, our attitudes affect our behaviour.

If we feel that blood is dirty, we may unconsciously be trying not to stain clothes and sheets — especially sheets that don’t belong to us. When you have learnt how to relax, you may recognize that you are holding your pelvic floor in a very tense state when you have a period, particularly when you are in bed. It’s possible that you are ‘holding back’ your period because you don’t want to make a mess on the sheets. If you are, it could be very difficult for you to relax completely. If you think this might be your problem, one answer to it is to use a drawsheet — a piece of old sheeting or an ancient towel on top of the under sheet for a little extra protection. It’s a lot less bother to wash than a sheet too.

EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA: ACUPUNCTURE

Posted by admin

Based on the ages-old Oriental medical system that was first developed in China, acupuncture uses needles – or sometimes other similar objects – to stimulate specific points on the body so that this stimulation can bring about beneficial changes elsewhere in the body. One of the aims of this system is to ‘re-balance forces’ and so improve the health of the subject as a whole as well as provide treatment for existing specific ailments.

Acupuncturists believe in the ancient Chinese philosophy that states there is a life force – called chi – which is made up of negative and positive flows of energy, respectively known as yin and yang, which course throughout the body along channels called meridians. Disease and pain, say the acupuncturists, are the result of an interruption or an imbalance in these flows of energy. Stimulation by acupuncture is meant to promote or re-establish the normal flow of energy along the meridians and so restore health.

Commonly used for the treatment of back pain, acupuncture has gained a considerably amount of acceptance from conventional medicine and is even used quite frequently by doctors. Although there is a great deal of dissent about how acupuncture works – one currently popular theory suggests that the needles cause the body to release additional endorphins, these being natural painkillers – there is little doubt that it certainly has been an effective treatment for sciatica and other symptoms of back problems.

If you’re put off by the very idea of having needles inserted into your body, it’s worth pointing out that the procedure is not in the slightest bit painful and at worst may be a touch uncomfortable. However, because it’s absolutely essential that needles used during treatment be sterile, you should only consult a fully qualified practitioner.
